“Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works.” – Steve Jobs

What do you think of when you hear the word “design”?

For many people, it’s the “pretty part”; colour, texture, photos, drawings. Design definitely encompasses these things but it is far more than just aesthetics. Design is the fundamental core of every project or product. If the design of your website is not easy to use, no amount of fantastic colour combinations will help your audience achieve their goals. If your marketing message is not laid out clearly in your brochure, no amount of clever image placement or typographical treatment will aid your bottom line. I believe that a successful project includes strong usability coupled with engaging aesthetics.

I’m a graphic designer with fifteen years of industry experience, designing for web, print, identity, software user interfaces, video games, handheld devices and CD-ROMs. I’ve worked on projects for small start-ups through to multi-million dollar corporations and believe there is no difference in how these projects are treated. Everyone deserves great design.

FAQ

What’s your education background?

I hold a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of British Columbia. I also have taken training in classical animation and digital design. However, a large part of what I know comes from practice, research, hard work, and the generous knowledge of talented and patient colleagues.

Do you have experience?

Yes, I’ve been working professionally since 1996.

Can you code?

I can write basic HTML/CSS, enough to comfortably build a brochure-style site. When more complex coding is called for, I have a number of colleagues who I can ask to be involved.

My friend’s son built a website/is good at art. Why should I hire you?

Professional design is more than just aesthetics. As a professional designer, I will seek to understand your business and your brand and make suggestions that enhance both. I will develop a solid understanding of your market and design in ways that are most appealing and useful to it.

Who are some of your clients?

My clients come from a wide range of industries including video games, fashion design, real estate development and educational products. The best way to get a feel for my work is not through the client list but through a review of my portfolio.

I have a web design ready to go. Will you code it for me?

Unfortunately, I only code for the sites I design. This is simply because my interest lies more in design than in code. I may be able to refer you to someone who can help you.

Do you offer SEO?

Internet marketing is an indepth field that is best served by professionals who focus on it. I can provide the very basics, but I can’t guarantee you will be the first listing on Google. I refer my clients to these people, who are geniuses.

Will you write the content?

No, but I may be able to refer you to someone who can.

We’re a charity/not-for-profit and we don’t have the budget for a designer. Can you still help?

I do a certain amount of volunteer design, depending on my workload. Contact me to talk about your project.
